Kara is a 23-year-old female student, that prior to moving to Newcastle had been an inpatient in a CYPS ward in another trust due to her diagnosis of AN. She had been admitted due to a BMI = 10 and escalating self-harm behaviours.

Kara moved to Newcastle to begin her university degree course, moving away from family for the first time and living with strangers and adjusting to university life. Kara struggled most with living with strangers, cooking and eating with them. Prior to university she would get regular support from her mother in the preparation and taking time to eat an appropriate amount for her body.

Kara was prescribed Sertraline, SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) at a dose of 150mg daily. She had as discussed struggled with this however, stating the side effects where painful. An alternative such as Olanzapine might have been considered if we felt necessary.

Kara’s weight was 59.1kg upon moving to Newcastle and within 3 weeks, her weight had dropped to 51kg equalling a BMI of 17.

The IPW team that was working with Kara’s care consisted of; A Dietician, psychologist, psychiatrist, CAMHS specialist nurse, ED specialist nurse and her GP. These individuals would regularly communicate with one another on subjects such as blood results, weight gain/loss, psychological progress and desire to change.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was used with Kara to help her manage her fears and anxieties around food and the fears she has around weight gain, eating with others watching. This was successful and using techniques such as Fairburn – Cognitive behavioural therapy and eating disorders and Mitchell – Treatment of eating disorders.
