Write a 6-8 page paper using the following criteria:
The Impact of Globalization: Healthcare Workers Influencing Global Health Policy
Imagine you work in a rural clinic in Somalia. You have completed an examination of a 10-year-old child who presented with a high fever (104F) that has lasted for 2 days, pain and stiffness in all joints, and an inability to stand or walk. You suspect polio and recognize that the disease has had a resurgence in incidence in this country. Ask yourself the following questions and provide a paper based on your findings.
Level of Analysis
Am I practicing in a country that offers the polio vaccine to everyone?
How do I find out about the government structure and function?
Are there governmental (i.e., public) policies that encourage or discourage vaccination for polio?
Policy Process
Which component(s) of the policy process does this health problem most likely fit?
If this is a matter that should be put on the government agenda, what methods could I use when approaching officials?
Which policy tools can I use to design a government response to the problem? Is a law or regulation already in place that addresses this problem? If so, where was the breakdown in implementation?
Sociocultural System
Policies that are studied without regard to the human systems in which they function have little relevance. One must start by identifying the contextthat is, the values of those who are affected by and affect the policy.
In the rural area in which you are practicing, is vaccination an accepted method of disease prevention? If not, what are the arguments against it?
If the procedure is accepted, was this child vaccinated? If not, why not?
Who was responsible for vaccinating the child?
Is the patient/family part of a minority group that is treated differently from the majority? Is that person/family adherent in other areas of health care?
Are there religious or personal philosophical reasons why vaccination was not administered?
Are there foods, clothing, sanitation practices, or language that could be barriers to vaccination?
