POST EACH DISCUSSION SEPARATELY

Discussion 1

Discuss the way in which the various sensory systems develop and how sensory development impacts a child's perception of the world.

Explain in your post how you might suggest a parent adjusts the home environment and social situations to allow for the infant and young child's system to develop.

Reply to classmate’s discussion on why you agree and offer constructive criticism and recommendations on how to address and offer advice to parents. Additionally, identify any insights you have gained as a result of reading the responses of your classmate’s post.

There are five senses that enhances life to make it more enjoyable. Each of these five senses taste, smell, touch, sight, and sound all enhance sensory development. Each sense develops through perceptions and sensations. When your body activates certain nerves, it is explained to be where the feeling of sensation comes from. Perception is on the stimulation side of senses. Sensory development impacts a child development when children touch things this stimulates growth that in return shows enhancements in psychosocial development. Our senses make life more enjoyable; smell and taste allow us to stimulate the desire to want to eat. Smell, taste, and touch are all used by infants after birth. This allows the child to crave the milk of the mother or formula, form bonds with their parents by the way they smell and feel. For example, there are children that can tell with their parents are not around but if you use a shirt or jacket either parent had on and place if near the child, he/she may end up not crying because they can smell that parent which will help them calm themselves. These senses enhance development for infants to adulthood.

Hearing is another sense infants develop in the womb. When a child is born it has been said that their hearing and sight should be fully functioning and is the same as an adult.

Home environments are important for the health, safety, and well-being of the child. Like, for infants to avoid SIDS parents may want to make sure they are in their own space when sleeping avoiding things like pillows because at birth infants’ necks and body parts are not strong enough for them to move if they cannot breathe. As children grow and develop parents may also introduce certain textures and foods to their children to enhance the stimuli to enhance the development of the child. Also, children pick up actions by watching other children and adults. Parents are always role models for their children. They look at them and pick up habits whether they are good or bad. For hearing parents may play soft classical music for their child throughout the day or while they are

sleeping, it’s like when parents sing the ABCs with their child and eventually the child will repeat the song.

Classmate’s Post (K. Mc)

The five senses that infant experiences are hearing, sight, touch, taste and smell. Some of these are very present during the time in the womb, but some are developed as the child enters the world and is no longer completely dependent on the mother for nutrition and safety. A child can hear sounds prior to birth, but these sounds are muffled in comparison to what they will hear out in the world. The child never really feels anything due to being in a small enclosed/safe area. While all senses are natural instincts, most of them continue to develop well into their early childhood years.

If a parent is susceptible to a quiet environment during pregnancy, and then begins introducing the infant to loud noises and sounds when he is very young this can cause sensory issues for the child. Many children experience overwhelming senses and some are unable to process the distinct difference between the senses. This is where autism and sensory disorder comes into play. As a parent, it is our job to protect and nurture our child throughout all stages of life and provide consistency. Infants have no control over their lives or situations and obviously can not communicate other than crying. This can be very overwhelming for a new parent to handle, especially with little to no sleep. Many times the caregiver loses their temper with the child, which in turn makes the child respond in the same way. These actions can scare a baby and potentially cause future emotional problems. It is never easy brining a new baby into the home, but learning to control your emotions and actions prior to giving birth makes a much brighter future for everyone involved.
